We are gathered here together in the US Senate today, to celebrate the Seventeenth Annual Commemoration of Vietnam Human Rights Day, and to commemorate the legacy of our fellow democracy advocates for Vietnamese people and all oppressive citizens of the world. It’s also an opportunity to congratulate their efforts and to remind us that much work remains to be done to uphold the human dignity.

WASHINGTON — Days after Facebook and Twitter added fuel to a revolt in Egypt, the Obama administration on Tuesday announced a new policy on Internet freedom, intended to help people get around barriers in cyberspace while making it harder for autocratic governments to use the same technology to repress dissent.

...is a great opportunity for me to address such a significant issue, and one which deserves the attention of citizens, governments, and I know is drawing that attention. And perhaps today in my remarks, we can begin a much more vigorous debate that will respond to the needs that we have been watching in real time on our television sets.

The Constitution provides for freedom of religion; however, other laws and policies restricted this right in practice.

The central government continued to deny citizens the right to change their government. Prison conditions were harsh and at times life threatening. Corruption in the police and judiciary persisted.

Political instability and polarization continued in 2009 and occasionally resulted in violence when anti-government groups, affiliated with Thaksin Shinawatra, clashed with Thai security forces.

For many centuries the walls was built for many purposes. Some walls are for good benefit, and some are not. One wall men built in the last century was the Berlin wall. It was a wall to isolate people by the oppressive government.

In July 2008 alone over 500 Christians around the country were pressured to renounce their faith. Christians are threatened with eviction from their villages, confiscation of livestock, denial of government identity cards, denial of education and withholding of food from prisoners.

Amnesty International calls on the Lao authorities to release, immediately and unconditionally nine peaceful protesters who have gone missing since their arrest on 2 November 2009. Amnesty International considers them prisoners of conscience, arrested solely for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression.

But countries that restrict free access to information or violate the basic rights of internet users risk walling themselves off from the progress of the next century.
